Waitrose Midland Goods Shed is a bespoke retail environment and Cookery School that has been tailored to respond to its unique location within the heritage core of the King’s Cross redevelopment area. The interior architecture and new retail concepts are designed to compliment both the monumental character of the Goods Shed and light filigree structure of the adjoining East Handyside Canopy

The completed interiors allow the heritage structure of the Grade II listed building fabric to take centre stage while creating a high quality, contemporary food store and Cookery School that will be the largest single retail offer in the rapidly developing master plan.
This rare opportunity to occupy a significant heritage building for a supermarket typology called for a full evaluation of the client brief. Where clean lines, concealed services and consistent appearance are typical, these were set aside and the design team worked back to the client’s core values of solidity, permanence and quality to provide a solution that rang true with the existing architecture.
